6-Day Volunteer Safari Special
Tarangire – Serengeti – Ngorongoro – Maasai Cultural Experience – Arusha
Overview
This 6-day Volunteer Safari Special is designed to offer an immersive wildlife, conservation, and cultural experience in Northern Tanzania. It combines iconic national parks with meaningful volunteer-friendly travel, budget-conscious accommodations, and authentic interactions with local communities. The itinerary balances adventure, learning, and relaxation, making it ideal for international and local volunteers seeking to understand Tanzania’s natural heritage while contributing positively to conservation awareness and cultural exchange.
The safari begins in Tarangire National Park, famous for its vast elephant herds and ancient baobab trees, continues through the endless plains of the Serengeti, descends into the world-renowned Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and concludes with a visit to a traditional Maasai village before returning to Arusha.
Accommodation options include a mix of comfortable lodges and well-maintained public campsites, allowing flexibility depending on volunteer preferences and budget.
Day 1: Arusha – Tarangire National Park
Overnight: Country Lodge or Migombani Public Campsite
After an early breakfast in Arusha, volunteers meet their professional safari driver-guide for a short briefing about the journey ahead. This is also an opportunity to introduce the conservation themes of the safari, discuss park rules, and highlight responsible tourism practices.
The drive to Tarangire National Park takes approximately 2–3 hours, passing through rural Maasai villages, open savannah, and small local markets. Upon arrival at the park gate, formalities are completed before entering one of Tanzania’s most underrated yet ecologically rich national parks.
Tarangire is best known for:
The day is spent on an extensive game drive, following the Tarangire River, which acts as a lifeline for wildlife during the dry season. Volunteers will have the chance to observe animals at close range while learning about ecosystems, water dependency, and human-wildlife coexistence.
A picnic lunch is enjoyed at a designated picnic site within the park, offering time to relax, take photos, and reflect on the day’s sightings.
In the late afternoon, the safari exits the park and proceeds to the overnight accommodation.
Dinner is served at the lodge, followed by an evening discussion around conservation challenges in Tanzania and expectations for the coming days.
Day 2: Tarangire – Serengeti National Park
Overnight: Suenos de Africa Camp or Seronera Public Campsite
After an early breakfast, the group departs for Serengeti National Park, traveling through the scenic highlands and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The journey itself is an experience, with changing landscapes from dry savannah to lush green hills.
As the vehicle descends into the Serengeti plains, volunteers are greeted by vast open spaces stretching as far as the eye can see. The Serengeti is one of the most famous wildlife reserves in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its exceptional biodiversity and the Great Migration.
Upon entering the park, a game drive begins immediately, as wildlife sightings often occur close to the gates. Lions resting under acacia trees, giraffes moving gracefully across the plains, and large herds of herbivores are common sights.
A packed lunch is enjoyed during the drive, allowing maximum time for wildlife viewing.
In the late afternoon, the group heads to their chosen accommodation:
After dinner, volunteers can enjoy an evening under the African sky, listening to the sounds of nature and sharing experiences from the day. Guides often provide informal talks about predator behavior, migration patterns, and ongoing conservation efforts in the Serengeti ecosystem.
Day 3: Full Day in Serengeti National Park
Overnight: Suenos de Africa Camp
This day is dedicated entirely to exploring the Serengeti National Park.
An early morning sunrise game drive is highly recommended, as this is the best time to witness predators returning from hunts and herbivores becoming active. The soft morning light also provides excellent photography opportunities.
The day includes:
Volunteers are encouraged to ask questions, keep wildlife observation notes, and engage with the guide about ecological relationships and conservation challenges.
A picnic lunch is taken in the park, followed by continued exploration of the central Serengeti (Seronera region), known for its year-round water sources and high concentration of wildlife.
In the late afternoon, the group returns to camp for rest and refreshment. Dinner is served at the camp or campsite.

Upon arrival at the crater rim, there is time to admire the breathtaking panoramic views of the Ngorongoro Crater, often referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World.”
The group then proceeds to their overnight accommodation:
